What We Believe
Faith is a journey and comes through prayer, reflection and struggle. You don't need to believe everything we do to be a part of our church, and we encourage you ask lots of questions and discern what God is saying as we encounter him today.
Faith is also more than just accepting statements about the nature of God and the world. Faith is about a relationship of love and trust that shapes everything we do. Faith is always lived out in actions. Here's what we believe about God and what God has called us to do and become. God The Triune God – The Father as Creator, Jesus Christ as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as the Sustainer – is the centre of the Christian faith. The mystery of our faith is that God is one, yet is somehow also three. We experience God as a relationship, the Father to whom we come, the Son through whom we come, and the Spirit by whom we come. Jesus has revealed these things, and it is in him that we see who God truly is. The Bible The Bible inspires and guides us in what we believe and how we live. Presbyterians accept the scriptures of the Old and New Testament as the written word of God. It is the most authoritative source for faith and practice. By reading the Bible under the promised guidance of the Holy Spirit we can hear who God is, what God has done and what God requires of us today. Through the written word we can encounter Jesus Christ who is the living and eternal Word of God. Worship and Sacraments Worship gives us an opportunity to praise, listen and respond to God. In worship we give ourselves to God and seek God’s healing, saving presence in Jesus Christ. Every week we seek to be changed by that presence and empowered by the Spirit to be God’s people in the world. In worship, we celebrate two sacraments – baptism and communion – which are visible expressions of God’s good news and grace. They have been given to us by God as a way to accept, sustain and grow the gift of faith. Reaching Out and Serving The Christian church exists for others. We believe that Jesus came into the world to demonstrate God’s love for the world and its people. Everyone who follows Jesus is called to love and serve their neighbours and share God’s Good News in all that we do and say. Worship is not just about what we do when we gather on Sunday mornings, it is about what we do out in the world day by day and week by week. We accept Jesus as our risen and living Lord and seek to live our lives under his guidance and direction.
